Also, they were not fitted to P51 or P52 until after delivery. It is not that unusual, and the turret is an easy fit, on a suitably prepared ship.

Vessel returned from trials a few hours ago, and someone was ready to catch her arrival.

To fit a gun complete with appended supply and loading system requires an expert team to transpose data from the Ships reference Gyro through the Decks to the Gun ring flange. The gun has to be installed to an exact plane parallel to the ship's horizontal and be on the 0/180 fore and aft line. The Gun ring is machined to the plane, as found , and the fore and aft line is etched in on the same ring.If it was me this would all be done in dock before leaving the UK. The question therefore is the ship suitably prepared?

They whip them in and out on a regular basis in the Dockyard so the expertise is there to be used. Once the builders has met the spec with their bit, mounting the turret shouldn't be a problem. We have done it before!
Time for another break I think......

There used to be photos on the NS facebook page of them doing it in the past (and removing the gun by road to Collins Barracks for Ord to have a proper look at it with their magic sticks.)
    With regards to
To fit a gun complete with appended supply and loading system
Unlike other systems the OTO melara is a self contained system. Hoist and gun are one, requiring very little human interaction once primed. Load it up from the RU locker beforehand and then fire away from the bridge. Installation away from build is no different to fitting any other mechanical equipment aboard ship after build. You can be pretty sure that engineers from OTO Melara have been in place already making sure the ship is properly prepared for installation.
As I said, Roisin and Niamh were both delivered without their main gun, and there was no major issues. In practice, the main gin will go through a wide range of pre firing tests after delivery to make sure it is safe, before being certified. With P61, 62 and 63, this was up to 12 months after commissioning.

NS has its own Ord section. Nothing goes to Collins Barracks, as Army Ord are not 76mm qualified.

Why did it go to Collins so? Was a while back and I dont have bookface any more, so I can't find it.
Or maybe it went from the Dockyard in Cobh and they didn't want to risk taking the ferry.

Pictures are of Roisins gun being remounted after travelling from Haulbowline to Rushbrooke by road... hence the confusion ..I think

They are in Irish Naval Service Photo Section Page. Quite comprehensive386758_10150443659260944_1578055500_n.jpg386758_10150443659260944_1578055500_n.jpg

Yeah I remember the photos of it going under the bridge under escort, hope the road clearance is still good.

Word from Devon is there were gearbox issues identified during trials. Lips tightly shut as to how serious.

Last week of this month, when there is enough water under the hull. Spring tides from 23rd on. Tidal range a big issue. Again.

So the gearbox issues have been sorted? Or was it not as bad as it could have been?

As an aside the Torridge Pilot, Mr Roger Hoad retired last week.
Well he retired earlier this year, but his replacement, Paul Brown was involved in an accident shortly after taking over, and was unable to take up his duty until now.

I presume when they can float the boat and she is good to go!! These four ships at over 2000 tonnes are bigger than most corvettes but have a narrow field of Naval capability. Reading John Dunbar, he has recommended the upgrading of the RN Batch 2 OPV's at £110m for a five ship improved capability. Starting with UAV's to improve surveillance range, add SIGINT and ELINT capability , add anti-submarine surveillance, act as mother ships to unmanned sub-hunting technology, consider a towed array , and improve self defence capability by adding 2 x 25mm guns and an aft facing CIWS , and finally a SEA GNAT soft kill decoy system. He notes that OPV's deployed in the Mediterranean Sea on Intelligence missions can expect to face a range of attacks from low to mid-level intensity, including air attacks. I hope we are not depending exclusively on Holy Water and Miraculous Medals.

I'm just getting a 404 for that link? But unless we've got a new 76mm in the Shaw's mount will have to come from somewhere?

From looking through Google, I think it's basically that one of the Peacocks can't sail due to lack of crew.

Disgraceful way to treat the members of the Defence forces. Unfortunately it is the same throughout the rest of the public services. THe most recent pay deal in around 4% rise over 3 years just showed how little Fine Gael thinks in regard to public Service.

Well we merry pensioners have had no actual pay rise approaching a decade , but did have a 10% cut and USC since 2011. We got back some FEMPI in two small tranches but are still being fleeced 5% with a reduced level of USC. We need to get back all FEMPI plus a decent pay rise. In the mean time Dail Salaries continue to increase while the landlords in the Dail are also benefiting from extortionate rents and building up new degrees of poverty and homelessness. Pork Barrel politics for the untouchables.

    Link working now

Thing is NS manning levels were even bad in the good times

Things like the following don’t help:
    - insufficient establishment for 9 ship navy
    - lack of Accomodiation ashore so crews have to sleep on the ships when tied up
    - the 2 year shore rotation including time at sea
    - Op PONTUS / SOPHIA meaning longer patrols (I’d say there are positives for morale as well)
    - strength not meeting establishment
