  • Postponed and extended are not the same things.

    May I suggest a dictionary?

Are there any senior officers left in the NS any more? I believe the ban on promotions mean they are all the same rank these days.

2 Captains recently retired, not replaced.

        • In this case they are the same, if the in service date of a new vessel is "extended", the replacement of an existing vessel will be "postponed".

          • No.
If the original replacement program was due to take 36 months, now it takes 40 months.

            Postponed beans putting things off
Extended means making something bigger or longer.

If Dev needed to add a few rooms to his house because mrs dev is expecting sextuplets does he
            (a) extend
            (b) defer

            • Yes but when was the programme supposed to start?? The down payment was budgeted for this financial year, if the contract isn't signed this year it has been postponed (extended sounds like political speak to me (and I'm a glass have empty kind of guy)).

              We'll agree to differ??!

So thats why I just moved house

                        • Navy springs a leak

                          Sunday October 18 2009

A QUARTER of Ireland's ageing Navy fleet are being given ultrasound tests on their hulls after a powerwash punched holes in one patrol vessel.

The Naval Service's oldest ships, the LE Emer (31 years old) and the LE Aoife (30), are having structural tests amid fears that they are reaching the end of their service lives.

A third ship, the LE Aisling, built in 1980, is also due to be retired as ships usually have a 30-year life. However, a replacement programme will not see the first ship in service until 2012 at the earliest.

After the Emer was recently powerwashed, a 4cm hole was found in the starboard hull. An ultrasound survey discovered two more holes.

The damage was caused by seawater erosion and microbiological contamination.

It sounds like there might be more than one type of leak.

One of the inrushing water kind.

The other of the "make up your bloody mind and sign the order" variety.

Depends on what the customer wants. Nothing specific mentioned but in our case it will be our standard FP fit.

I read Laverys comments in the Sindo today. obviously he logs in here at some point and rations his releases to the paper as this was commented on three weeks ago on the board...

                            • Incorrect Murph. They only found Aoifes weak spots last week, as she is currently in drydock.

Seawater erosion? Did the anodes not work?

Microbiological contamination? What does that mean? Did the antifouling not work?
