In the 20 Foot container the ship is designed to also carry?
Not all UAVs are Predator size.

      • Steel is cheap and air is free, isn't that what they say.... Hangars aren't that complicated, and anyway, where else would you put your bikes?

(pic. of hangar of HMS Sutherland, one of the RN Task Group heading towards the Med, NOT to invade Libya, honestly)

          • I saw a picture similar to this from a different angle earlier in the week (thought it was a type 42) LOL

            • It seems the Dauphin's naval role was replace by the CASA's then.
The role never fully evolved with the helo and the Casa took over the Beech 200 Kingairs role as two of these were 'maritime assets'.

I Know I saw the Dauphin in action a couple of times in the role, never with a any great success and we got more results from RAF Nimrods..but thats another story, but I think it is only fair to point out that FP work using a Helo was conceptual. Most other things we tried with boats ships worked because they had time to evolve, you did't get long enough with the helos for their role fully to evolve and no specific party apart fro the Dail were to blame given the Dauphins were pulled more times for ministerial transport than anything else...247 even had nice blue carpets fitted for the job.

If the ship had been delivered with its own helos and naval crews it would have been different, mightn't have worked but the effort would have been more credible.

                  • Looks as if the main armament is a compromise, the space looks to be suitable for something much bigger than a 25mm.

                    • More justification for replacement ships(as if it was needed).

                      • THE Naval Service will make history next month when for the first time one of its ships carries out fishery protection duties in foreign waters.
What about NAFO duties mid Atlantic?

                        • NAFO/NEAFC 'waters' are International Waters - The 'Convention Areas' of both include the 200 mile zones of coastal States, but management for both only applies outside of the 200 mile limit, and so the policing the NS did previously (with Eithne?) was solely in international waters. The same applies for NASCO, which effectively covers both regions.

                            • They are being built.

                              At the moment.

Although, the builders may be closed on sunday.

Seriously though, there would be nothing recognisable as a ship at this early stage yet, just lots of fabricated frames and cut steel. The advantage with the Appledore facility is as all fabrication is indoors, fabrication/painting etc is not hampered by weather conditions.
I wouldn't expect to see a recognisable hull form until early next year, at best. The Main work in the shipyard currently though is the fabrication of sections of the second RN aircraft carrier.

So if anyone finds themself in the Bideford area, feel free to pass by and have a look in the fabrication hall, It can be seen from the B3233 to Instow. Once the Carrier blocks are out, then P61's Keel can be laid.

                              • So some major components besides the frames are already built or are they still "on paper" ?
