As pointed out above, in the US Army, bomb tech's are primarily enlisted. They are Engineer Soldiers by branch who volunteer for EOD. The Engineer officers leading EOD units also have to be bomb tech trained and will share in the duties to include the "long walk". Once they get above the rank of CPT, they do more leading and less diffusing just like any other officer or senior NCO. My hat's off to them, the EOD Company on my last deployment did amazing work and kept plugging along despite two KIA.
Every day they went out looking for IED's....fair play to them.
Oddly enough, last week I met a Navy EOD officer, who when she was a junior officer was assigned to the nuclear response team. Her duties included diffusing nukes....as one does....she was quick to say she never had to put her skills to use!!!!!!!! She did say her being EOD led to some awkward moments when dating as most blokes didn't really have a good come back for that one.
I saw the Irish guys in AFG at ISAF but never got to talk to them, they had a good reputation in the EOD community. As one chap said "Well, let's be honest, you Irish know a thing or two about bombs at this point..."
