    Ok...Listen carefully...
To "Grave" a ship in times of wooden hulls was to insert a new piece of timber, known as a graving piece, in Place of Timber which has rotted in the hull of a wooden vessel.

From that we get graving dock, which is a permanent dock with walls usually constructed of stone or concrete and sealed in the normal way with a "caisson". The term originated from the old practice of Graving, or Beaming a ships bottom. Today a Graving dock is synonymous with "dry dock".

      Good one, Goldie
The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity.

Wait a while...let them think I have all this stuff in my head.

L.E. Aoife is in Drydock at Rushbrooke at the moment. Interesting to see her out of the water if you haven't seen it before.

dublin could never realistically be used unless a naval base is constructed there. If a ship is in drydock there, how do the crew get to work everyday?

How would the ship need a crew if it was in drydock?

Who do you think does the maintenance work while she is in drydock? Dockyard staff do the engineering bit, but the housekeeping is all Naval.

I though it would be all contracted out to the dockyard.

No, they are busy enough with the heavy stuff. The Dockyard itself only has a staff of about 50. If they are busy, sometimes they borrow tradesmen from the Former H&W yerd in Belfast.

Dublin was a great drydock while on the sweepers the crew had to use a toilet on the quay wall and most of us had shares in the wharf tavern as at the time we had many a stand easy there ( coffee of course) and then back to work to help the dockers with the caulking of the decks ... happy days ...

The crew still have to work. The ship still requires quartermasters and its the busiest time of year for the engineer and engineering branch. The bosun will be trying to get bits and pieces done as well.

You won't fit the entire crew of a Naval Vessel into a "Boat" unless its the David F.

There are some photos of other NS Ships in drydock in the gallery.
The Proximity to the Naval base means that those not accomodated aboard ship can return to their normal accomodation, in the same way as they would when they are not aboard ship. i.e, they can go home at night.
