We need cover for the same reason as the MSF vessel! Doctors are often recruited on a mission only basis from a volunteer panel. Plenty of Consultants are experienced club sailors and often own large yachts.

HSE is hort enough of Medicos without offloading them to the Med.

Paramedics are first responders, well capable of dealing with the scenarios being presented. Doctors are available at short notice from other agencies. Not a game stopper.
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe

It depends on the ability to fully handle the ongoing problems of Hypoxemia and acidosis even after apparent CPR recovery. Sometimes 100% oxygen needs to be delivered with other medical procedures such as intubation. Depending on water temperature during immersion Core temperature remains a consideration for up to 48 hours. Having aid on a ship, say 50miles away, is probably a two hour waiting period. Caring for 70 crew for 10/12 weeks plus dealing with traumatised casualties presenting with post drowning symptoms and other mass problems needs a just in case philosophy. Keep away from the HSE. DOD should recruit a panel of willing temporary MD's for mission only appointments.

        • Some more reaction from Italy along the lines of what delayed Eithne's deployment?:

          • Time to stop this madness. While the naval service is to be commended for their actions, A collection and return policy must now be adopted with these economic migrants.

Stop reading the Sun/Daily mail. You don't bring children and pregnant women accross the Sahara, and pay local gangsters tor a place on an overcrowded raft in the med unless you are desperate. They are not economic migrants. If they were, they would be heading south. They are fleeing the dangerous situation that they find themselves in.
Read some proper news about what is going on in their country of origin. Economy is the least of their worries.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Are you that stupid you can't work you what's really happening. The real refugees don't have the money to leave. And as for the papers that I read, even if it was just the Ann and Barry books from play school, one should be able to spot that's the are actually economic migrants and not refugees that we are dealing with.

                • With the size of europe and its population size, these numbers are miniscule - thats the real news.
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

Well if we are going to resort to namecalling, clearly I am not half as stupid as you.

Just to comment on background to recent refugee controversy. The refugees arrive in Libya, under their own arrangements, from all parts of Africa, Middle East, and near Asia. They then become prisoners of circumstance to those arranging travel to Europe. In most cases they are retained in a marshaling area from which time the method , and direction of travel is controlled by those we call traffickers or smugglers. Until they are put on craft , they are prisoners and forced to sea in a manner not of their choice. Because of those circumstances alone, SOLAS action is necessary to save lives in jeopardy . It is estimated that about 2000 refugees have died by drowning so far this year.
In regards to medical cover on ships rescuing people in multiple hundreds I was suggesting an MD would add benefit to the range of treatments arising. Hospitals, HSE, Military doctors, do not solve the problem but paint you into a corner of difficulties and paperwork. Get a volunteer MD, swear him/her in, put them in uniform, pay them in the rank of juniour Comdt./ Lieut. Comdr., demobilise on return home with a E5000 gratuity.

If only it were that straightforward...Doctors are a breed unto themselves and until you've worked in their midst and understand how their system works and what has to happen around them to get them to work its absolute pie in the sky!

"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Or ask Irish Aid or an NGO for a doctor at zero cost to the DF budget
