  • We have a new Major General - Major General Michael Beary - new FC of UNIFIL

    Congratulations Sir,

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Major General Michael Beary as the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Major General Beary will command approx 10,598 uniformed personnel from over 40 countries with a land, maritime and air component, including an Irish Infantry Group of 186 personnel, which will increase to 360 in November.

Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM said “Brigadier General Beary’s appointment is an endorsement of his impressive track record of command, both at home and overseas, and is also a reflection of the substantial contribution being made by the Defence Forces to United Nations Peace Support operations in the region.”

Ireland last held the position of Force Commander UNIFIL from February 1981 to May 1986 when Lieutenant General William ‘Bull’ O’Callaghan held the appointment. 47 Irish Defence Forces personnel have lost their lives serving with UNIFIL since 1978, with over 32,000 individual tours of duty completed in that time.

    • Interesting that as force commander he commands about the equivalent of the entire defence forces while being two ranks junior to the CoS

Contradiction in the text then as one gives him as a B/General and the other a Major General.

CoS mentions him as a B/ General

          • He is a Brig Gen now, he will be promoted to Maj Gen for the appointment. The Bull was a Lt Gen when he was FC
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

            • Interesting move that.By appointing him to FC as a Maj Gen he can potentially return to Ireland as Lt Gen on promotion to CoS.Had he been appointed a rank higher he would have had to retire on his return.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Is Brig Beary promoted as Major General or only to this rank while in UNIFIL ?

                • As I understand the rank is temp for the duration of the posting and his existing/prior rank prevails on completion of the posting. Unless otherwise promoted or there is a specific DFR passed to provide otherwise he would retire as a Brig.Gen with that title and financial effects.

Didn't something similar happen with Lt. Gen. Pat Nash.

Because he had no place left to go. You can't hold a Maj Gen vacancy open for an overseas Lt Gen appointment, and you can't assume when he returns, the current lt gen will move aside to give him the job.
