What is important is the quality and utility of the actual platform. Aircraft carriers dont get scrapped everytime a new plane etc is introduced.

Scorpions introduced first in 1980, retired 2020? Had been obsolete by 2000
Fouga Magister introduced in 1975 (obsolete at time of introduction) retired 1998

And if we look at modern military equipment 10-15 years is the development time, let alone the time in service.

A good platform is one that allows constant updates and upgrades and so the platform may be in service for 30-40 years but hopefully not with the same systems. A modern M119A3 is way ahead in terms of systems of its L118/9 cousin even if the gun is still pretty much the same.
We have habit of maintaining equipment in service long after it has outgrown its usefulness. This should neither be encouraged or continued.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

I said a platform and systems. The DF bought mowags in 2001, and lo and behold a number were converted to CRVs in 2015/16. Unfortunately many of the systems the DF decide to put back into the refurbished/upgraded hulls are two generations behind and unable to meet minimum NATO standards both in terms of capability and quantity.

        • Getting back to basics, the DF is very short of skilled techs to maintain these increasingly high tech vehicles and is still, in some places, on a Mon-Fri 9-1630 mode, so vehicle availability is shite, so you could buy all the whizzbangs you want and they'll rot behind the Base Workshops for lack of parts and techs. Replacing the Scorpions is clearly well overdue but so are some of the outdated base practises where it's Union rules, Bud. A lot of mentalities still have to change.

          • Somebody made the point that the French brought 13 Leclercs to UNIFIL and they were laughed at because the Israelis had 3000 tanks. The reason the French brought them is because they were making the point, to anyone who cared to notice, that they would be intimidated by no-one, least of all by the Israelis, big tank arm or not. France will not tolerate anyone shooting at their men and were making the subtle point that anyone who cared to shoot at them, would be fired upon and with menaces and an aircraft carrier group and a decent air force were only a few hours away. The message also applied to any Lebanese-based actors who might decide to kick off. It also gave notice to UN HQ that the French also maintain a very strong streak of independence, inside UNIFIL or without.

              • That came as a bit of a surprise. Thought some TD or half minister said recently they were getting an upgrade?

Didn't hear anything about that, though the question of replacement now gets interesting...
