Santana, went out of business in 2011. Never bought by "real" Landy lovers .

In fact so rare are the Santana in the UK that in the last 30 odd years of living there I can count the ones I have seen on one hand, so rare in fact I can actually remember where and when I last saw one, (nice navy blue SW) Padstow, Cornwall ,,,,,, last August and it was raining ,,,,,,, near choked on my Rick Stein fish and chip takeaway at the sight of it .

Sexy beast!!! Very nice pre 2007 LR Defender with A/C you got there RGJ, very similar to the Czech pre 2007 model without A/C:

And their post 2007 models with A/C this time:

Sadly not a single Wolf Station Wagon among them. Just good old trust worthy, hard working, worlds best 4 x 4 Defenders.

Reason being, as mentioned before Wolf SW were NEVER made by Landy other than the two customer models discussed in previous post. In the region of 6 SW in total. Two for the Canadians of which the only one that remains in the whole world is at the Dunsfold collection. The rest went to Ze Germans, replaced by G Wagon. Germans remember bought a mixture of hard top's, pick up's and station wagons.

There are loads of MOB's out there using 5 door (and other door) Defender in lots of roles and once tricked out they may indeed look like a "Wolf" but the only MOB's to buy actual TUM HS were the UK, the Dutch and Croatia. None of them bought TUM HS Station Wagons. Because there too bloody expensive and the basic Defender does the job for the roles its used in, not lugging Bowman, WMIK etc, etc, etc, around the place. The basic wolf upgrades which cost a packet are even more expensive when you try a fit a station wagon body on one. UK MOB has a huge fleet in all three services of Defender SW. Because its awesome!!! But no "wolf SW's".

Either way a fantastic vehicle and one the Irish DF should have gone with ages ago, ticks all your box's, bit late now though.

So a rhetorical question, what makes a Defender a TUM HS "Wolf" in MOB speak, or a Defender XD in Land Rover civilian speak. Or not?

      • as a matter of interest, opinion from any of the Landy fans/experts on here...

is buying a defender for MOD surplus dealers to be considered or avoided generally?

are the vehicles sold as seen or do you get any type of mechanical history from them at all? i know you generally won't get a gaurantee but i'm more interested in the mechanical reliability of them. bearing in mind their previous lives are they driven to death or kept in good order? cosmetics don't worry me but as somebody looking for a project i'd rather have a bit of piece of mind picking one up over some farmer here who had one in the shed for the last five years or has no history at all.

        anybody any experiences, advice, etc?

        • Aren't the ex-mod Landies a lot more expensive than a bog standard defender of the same vintage/care level.

          • Lots and lots of ex war stock being sold off these days, from mint low mileage series III's that have spent the last 20 years stored in the rock, to the other end of the extreme where you can buy crash damaged TUM / TUL and everything in between. White fleet Defenders included. Some restrictions on exporting on some vehicles though.

Parts are not an issue as there is a huge industry built up around Landy, you can buy brand new series II galvanized chassis as an example.

Or door tops for a series III as another example.

That's just the beginning, you could in theory build a brand new 40 year old Land Rover using just parts bought from dealers / manufactures who specialist in replacement parts for classic vehicles.

Or you could just buy a nice condition TUL HS from someone like Jackson's. If you did not want to rebuild that is.

L Jackson & Co, Ex army trucks, mod sales, disposal sales, nato vehicles, unimog, ex mod, uk gov, bv 206, mod surplus, military truck sales, ex military sales, gov sales, british army truck sales, army surplus trucks, ex army vehicles, world wide shipments, overland vehicles, 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, all wheel drive trucks, military land rover, us army, land rover wolf, bundeswehr, bundeswehr fahrzeuge, hagglunds, military vehicles, caterpillar

Folks like Jackson's and Blanchard will do a "Customer specs" on all their vehicles so any colour or upgrades / rebuild that your pocket can afford. All road worthy vehicles will come with MOT etc. Options as long as a piece of string.

P.A. Blanchard & Co. is a family business founded in the late sixties, we are one of the few companies in the UK that specialise in the supply of high quality ex Ministry of Defence Landrovers and parts.

1964 Series IIA Soft Top rebuild.

All whistles and bells ground up rebuild, GBP 21, 995.

But it is in effect a brand new vehicle. That's all whistles and bells for a 1964 Landy by the way, nothing in the way of reversing sensors, A/C, electric windows etc. etc. on this beauty.

Great site this but with some jaw dropping prices.

Or a nice reconditioned ex MOD series III for around GBP 4,500.

Old story, you get what you pay for.

The Landy as we know it today may be on the way out of production this year, but when you can still buy an as new (or totally new rebuild) 40 year old Landy ,,,,,,,,,,, it will never die.

              Long live the Landy.

                • See the cloggies are well on the way to completing their new LV replacement program.

Very fine looking they are too. VW's so they would be wouldn't they.

1,667 new vehicles in 14 variants.

Some interesting points about the contract (or not):

The procurement contract of the Amaroks stipulates that maintenance of the vehicles will be carried out by the supplier (VW). The military vehicles will be taken to the nearest service point for minor and major maintenance.

In the case of a breakdown on the road, the ANWB (Cloggie roadside assistance organisation) will be called out and fix then and there or recover vehicle to the above mentioned VW dealer.

All VW's were modified for use prior to delivery to Cloggy specs in the VW factory so all mods are also under guarantee. Upgrades included stronger suspension, weapon / radio racks, 24v systems, MOB tow packs, convoy lights / tac lights, AT tyres, hard tops, antenna mounts etc. etc.

                  Well done chaps.

                      • Right, sorry to harp on about this but I have through a little bit of looking discovered that the Dutch affiliation with VW does not stop with Amarok and does not stop with the military.

Its national! They have totally nailed the whole commonality (of supplier) thing, big time. Many many pages back there were arguments that stated the DF do not have the economy of scale to be influential enough to tip prices they had to pay in their favour, could not dictate T's & C's and therefore had to go cheap and often.

Bollocks I said, go with a single supplier who can and will provide you not just with a 4 x 4 replacement but a replacement for everything from runabout mini vans, to staff cars, to panel vans, to passenger vans, to 4 x 4's, to ambos, the whole bloody lot. That's where your economy of scale comes from and that's where your bargaining power comes from.

VW was actually the supplier I mentioned as well because they cover the whole raft of the above (and I'm a VW fan, but other manufactures are available). Well the Cloggies did just that. Not just the mob but civilian police, ambo and fire service as well. That is the way to go shopping!

Bloody well done cloggy.gov.co.nl. Lesson to be learned there chaps. Big one.

Think that should cover most uses (and plenty more) of LV's in the DF, and a few other agencies.

Bugger, now I've gone and found a video of the Cloggy Amarok.

This is "TV-Amarok-army" by CRC on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.
