  • Roll mat- alternatives?

Anyone used an inflatable mattress instead of a roll mat out on the ground?

Herself has one (not in RDF) and I got the idea of using an inflatable, haven't tried it out yet though.

    A few thoughts...

    - Folded up, its a lot smaller than a roll mat (think slightly larger than a poncho)
    - Inflated using a footpump which makes a horrible squeaky noise (though it was the cheapest one on offer)
    - It takes longer than a roll mat to set up and put away when finished
    - Its comfier than a roll mat
    - The roll mat won't puncture

    Any views?

I have a self inflating roll mat(LIDL). Tis the best of both worlds. Does take a little longer to roll up though.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

For mil use the roll mat is probably the better alternative. Its light, cheap, requires no setup, can be cut up for elbow and knee pads and is the only replacement you're likely to get if you lose your super duper inflatable mat. Which is expensive, requires time to inflate and deflate and can be punctured.

I recently bought an Airic mat from Alpkit (http://www.alpkit.com/airic/). It costs only ÂŁ17 (A fraction of the cost of thermalite mats). Smaller and lighter than the issue roll mat. It looks pretty difficult to puncture but holes are easily repaired and even when punctured the mat will still provide better insulation than the issue roll mat. Very comfy but takes longer to roll up. I just fold mine in 4 and use it as cushioning against my back in my bergen.

I wouldn't suggest cutting it up to make knee pads but then again I wouldn't suggest cutting up your issue roll amt either unless you have a very understanding CQ.

The lightwieght stretcher the army use doubles up as a nice sleeping mat and is very tough so it won't get ripped.

Looks Gucci! Is it hard to deflate in a hurry? Just roll if up is it?

I got one of these a few weeks back, a slight bit thin but sleep on a fleece and its cosy

No.Just open the valve and fold the mat in half lenghtways and roll tightly towards the valveend.Air is expelled. When fully rolled you close the valve and slide on the elastic straps to keep it rolled. It also comes with a lightweight stuff bag.
