First met CPO Sean O'Brien as coxswain on the Aoife in 1981, later served with him on Spike Island as a Lt., then again on the Eithne.
He was one of the old school and the perfect gentleman.
I used to love his stories going back about the NS.
He was a gas to talk to. He was always so well spoken and then every once in a while he would let loose a volley of blue language and it sounded so funny coming from him.
He was a rating with atitude and a comission.. although he never forgot his roots and will more often be rememebered by the enlisted more than the comissioned
there were a few in this category and there longevity is a tribute to ratings and their abilty to rise to higher abilities
This man was a credible representation to the abilities of those from the lower decks given the chance.
You could salute this guy and really mean it..for his comission, his ability and to him self!
My Late gran Uncle Lt Cdr John Doyle was another one of these. he had joined in 1941.. went through the ranks.. comissioned in the early 60's and stuck through thick and thin.. up to 1984.
yeah was a bastard at times destroyed a career or two but gave his all to the NS as did Sean O'Brien , Trooper O' Shea,..and a lot more comissioned from the ranks.
The 50th Aniversary of the NS back in 97 brought a lot of these guys to the fore but there are still guys who have gone unrecognised...
every ship had some.. every recruit class had some....please remeber those who were true contributers to a way of life that has passed.
PC will never allow it to be as it was.. yes it is still so different but even back when.. some will still shudder.

Yeah he is the small guy in the middle but at least he knows how naval officers should wear medals..have to sat that his funeral was very imperssive... nice to see 6 Ltcmdrs carrying a load.. a warrant barking at them Nice one Padidy...and ratings escorting him on foot from the cathedral to the grave yard.. in the rain nice to see those who he had damned to be there.. think I even shed tear..or was it the rain in my eye...
