  • What if Collins had invaded Ulster?!

Hey everyone, got a mad book for eleven euro in Porters about the Irish Civil War, and I was shocked to read in it about Michael Collins, great man that he was had an ulterior motive. He accepted the treaty, but secretly planned to invade and reclaim the six counties once his army was big and supplied properly. He organised gun running over the border among other sneaky things, but eventually gave this up(can't remember why).
I think that if Collins had attempted this, that Britain would have once again taken over.It would have been very hard for Collins to defend the island as a whole from overseas invasion.
Hmm, now why wasn't this mentioned in Neil Jordan's film??
Would it have scarred his reputation as a National and honest leader??
    Any thoughts??

Personally i think Dev set the country back about 30 years. His economic policy was a joke, his foreign policy was not much better. Think of the lovely motorways the marshall plan would have paid for! And as for his pro church consistution well we are still paying for that now

It wouldn't have scarred his reputation as a National leader, it would have probably enhanced it even.

He was the only man who had the skill and guts to finish the job that was started.

Collins was understandably pre-occupied with winning the Civil War, everything else was put on hold. There is also the unfortunate matter of his death.

With regards to the Marshall Plan, Ireland received aid between 1947 and 1957. Within that time there was three governments: Fianna Fail until 1948; The first coalition government between 1948 and 1951; Fianna Fail again from 1951 to 1954 and the second coalition from 1954 to 1957. So during the 10 years of Marshall Aid Fianna Fail was only in power for 4 years, the FG/Lab/Clann Na Poblachta coalition held sway for the remaining 6. De Valera and Fianna Fail cannot be entirely blamed for the mismanagement of the money.

Ireland received Marshall Aid in the form of loans, not grants as other countries got, and it was mostly spent on "draining the Shannon".

Yes, Collins was pre-occupied with winning the Civil war but once that was sorted out it is almost certain he would have turned to the task of sorting out the 6 counties.

If Collins hadn't have been killed we would be living in a 32 county republic now.

The problem with Switzerland is that as Europes bank its neutrality was respected, they were also a lot better at the multi ethnic harmony thing than we were/are.
Collins was a good insurectionary and a good general and according to 99.9% of reports a good man.
But that doesn't mean he'd be a good ruler...just look at the number of once admired revolutionarues who wen the way of Mugabe.

So you are saying that he wouldn't have been able to create another switzerland, not, turning Ireland into a Switzerland would have been a bad thing.
