For those of you with the displeasure of having BBC One Wales you are going to have to wait until 11.05pm for it.

That was an excellent show, giving a view of the UK Coastguard Heli in Scotland operating during the worst of Winter. Wasn't all "our boys" stuff either,as BBC is prone to,but an honest representation of the Difficult,Dangerous Job that the Sikorsky Crews do(Bristow operated this aircraft).
For example, one rescue, for a Trawler crewman who had broken an arm, they got out there, when the wind died and hovering became difficult. They dumped fuel to reduce weight but hovering was still difficult. The danger of them loosing an engine and ending up in the drink was greater than the Danger that thge crewman was in so they turned around and headed back to base without him. Tough Call but wise in the bigger picture.
Another case involved a mayday at the absolute max of their range. Guided to target by Nimrod aircraft, they picked up 7 survivors out of a possible 16 before having to head back, returning to base with only 5 minutes fuel. Another survivor was recovered 24 hours later.

My only hope is that somebody in power saw this show and realised how difficult SAR is and why it is vital that the crews operate with the absolute Best of equipment under them.

It was a really good program alright. The work they do really goes unnoticed by the vasy majority of people in both England and Ireland. Its good to know such people exist who are willingto help out others no matter what the elements throw at them. It proves that this country needs a creditable SAR service funded by the government either under the Aer Corps or The Coast Guard.

Agreed, it was an excellent programme thanks for the tip off. Just a few points though. It would be nice to be able to carry ANY fuel and have single engine hover. Lose one in the Dauphin while training never mind on an operation and I believe The crew are going for a swim i.e. 100% of the time of hovering in SAR configuaration. Secondly, look at the length of our coastline that is covered by 4 24hr SAR helis. It is already excellently covered but could do with newer, faster, longer range machines. Civilian and military. If you want to complain about a SAR service move to New ZeLand. I believe they have one daytime SAR helicopter for BOTH islands.

It was also good to see an Irish Pilot flying with them. Anyone know if Bristow have a website??
