  • Irish going to Liberia

The headquarters company will be under 12 people in size, and so will not need a Dail vote, just a cabinet decision in favour.

This could be in order to get an advance party in place for the far larger contingent being considered, which will require a Dail vote.

Ireland may send up to 400 troops to join a UN peacekeeping force in the strife-torn west African state of Liberia, Government sources said.

I thought they were sending out 200 troops?

How long would it take to get the 400 proposed troops equipped and ready to go to Liberia?

Its going to be a very though mission in lots of ways. Just think of the situation on the ground boy soldiers running around with ak47`s smacked out on crack cocaine, now thats dangerious.

A full HQ Company is near 200 bods not 12, which would be the strength of a Bn HQ. So is an Irish Lt Col going to command a multi national battalion or what?

Let's hope our troops don't have their hands tied behind their backs (again). I doubt the concept of COD 6 has ever occurred to any African with an attitude and a Kalashnikov.

Were there any such restrictions that exist in most UN missions regarding use of force these days that were in action in the Congo in 1960 with ONUC? Or did the troops have more 'robust' rules of engagement?

The DF won't benefit especially from Liberia as aopposed to Kosovo, unless something goes horribly wrong it won't really be considered much of a news item.
The general opinion given is that the Militias won't be particularly dangerous to regular troops on account of a lack of heavy equipment or local support.

You have gangs of 15 year olds high out of their heads on drugs coming up against you....and you don't think they will be a threat.
