It was near freezing point outside in Donegal those nights too. Hats off to them.

Looks like fun. I must admit, that reminded me I don't miss the cold and wet side of it!

                Fair play to all involved!
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Without impinging on anything Op-Sec, how often are Battalion level exercises conducted?

Equally, are there any full Brigade (or larger) exercises carried out by the DF on an annual basis?

Before Liberia the DF were doing battalion group ex.

Since that time there have Mission Readiness Exercises (MREs) that is part of a units build up to deployment overseas.

Put it this way, each battalion going to Chad does one, they are on a 4 month tour, so 3 battalions forming up a year.

Saw the AW139's coming home presumably from this ex on Friday night- low level over Naas in the torrential rain in perfect formation. Impressive sight.

I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

In fairness they stuck to the canal route, then did some real IFR - following the motorway home
