  • 200 new LPPV's for the British Army

A £180m contract to build 200 Foxhounds, the Armed Forces' next generation of light protected patrol vehicle, has now been signed with Force Protection Europe (FPE).

Foxhound, the British Armed Forces' name for the contract-winning FPE Ocelot vehicle, has been designed to provide unprecedented levels of blast protection for its size and weight.

Light and agile, the vehicle will allow troops to carry out a wide range of tasks in environments that may restrict larger, heavier vehicles - for example, moving with ease through narrow alleyways or crossing bridges.

Foxhound incorporates Formula One racing technology and was devised by engineers from the World Rally Championship, McLaren F1 and BMW.

Its engine can be removed and replaced in just 30 minutes and it can drive away from an ambush on only three wheels. Crew and passengers also sit inside a protective pod, which can be quickly adapted to transform the patrol vehicle into an ambulance or supply truck.

The first vehicles are expected to be available to troops for training in 2011, and will add to the wide array of protected vehicles already being used on operations in Afghanistan, including Mastiff and Ridgback.

another fantastic bit kit with F1 pedigree that will no doubt save lives and massively improve our protected patrolling capability.

Yes, or course when I board a vehicle here in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar, looking good is the most important thing on my mind.

Foxhound? Ocelot? sounds like someone has been playing too much metal gear solid.

no doubt she will have the added Bar Armour added when it enters Afghan.

what you are seeing now is the basic non-TE (Theatre Entry) version.

by the time we bolt on extra armour and ECM she will be a different looking beast, but still no beauty.

i love aggressive looking vehicles like this anyhow.

Has a bit of a early Rolls Royce look about the way the engine is away from the wheel.

Has the British Army never heard of standardisation??

The Americans certainly know how to do it.

have you ever worked with the Americans? have you seen how many different types of vehicles they have?

Indeed. The US vehicles are pegs, and holes. They keep whittling the hole until the peg fits. The BA do it the other way. Keep replacing a peg until you find the right one. Eventually you'll have all the right pegs in all the right holes, but you won't have a big ole mess of waste where you whittled the holes.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

                            different pegs for different holes.

each vehicle has specific pro's and con's in relation to each other.

modern warfare certainly is not a case of 'one size fits all' when it comes to vehicle types.

The American's know how to standardise, it helped them win a war after all. There are parts of the Abrams and the Bradley that are inter-changable and they have the Stryker Brigade concept.

The Army have already got the Husky. Why spend all that money on another vehicle when all the government needed to do was buy more Husky's or Panthers. Or instead of the buying the Husky just buy a lot of Foxhounds or a load of Panthers.

Seems to me that some pr**k in Whitehall is going on a spending spree with my taxes and not actually thinking things through.

I'm all for giving the troops the tools they need but common sense should come into play.
