  • British Army introduces new Pelvic Protection

Greater pelvic protection for troops in Afghanistan has been introduced to help mitigate the effects of IED blasts, the MOD has announced.

The three-tiered system of clothing and armour consists of special protective underwear and detachable armoured modular trousers. It has been designed to integrate with current kit being used by troops on operations.

The MOD has spent £10m on the new armour system to date. It balances protection with the necessary comfort and manoeuvrability for troops to undertake operations, enabling them to wear one or more of the protective layers depending on the task. They are already being worn by troops on operations, with 45,000 pairs delivered to Afghanistan and another 15,000 ready to be issued to deploying troops. A further 60,000 are to be manufactured and delivered to troops early next year.

The first layer of protection is a pair of shorts, which troops wear as underwear:

Most of the protective armour will be manufactured in Northern Ireland.

finally it looks like they have developed protection for this part of the body that soldiers can actually wear in relative comfort - worth it considering it's your crown jewels at risk.

    good news.

the sad thing is RGJ that

we are now loaded up with fllacker- boots- helmets- crotch protectors- goggles- etc etc

whilst the bad guy throws on a pair of manky sandals a long shirt and baggy kaks.

    Who exactly is winning
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

if you did it on body counts then it would be us - massively.

but this is the way modern warfare is going - until we get fully functioning and efficient endo-skeletons then it's down to the grunt to carry this kit alone.

i'd rather be better protected with a chance of survival and the prospect of my gonads being intact after an IED attack than wearing the "pair of manky sandals a long shirt and baggy kaks".

        I agree,

but you seem to forget the lesson of Terence McSwiney

Patrick Bury made that exact point to us when he came out to Maynooth recently.
          But there's no danger
          It's a professional career
          Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to johannesburg.

i take it you have been rubbing shoulders with Tim Horgan this Christmas?!"

if that's your philosophy then there is no point sending your lads to the Lebanon and we may aswell all stay at home too.

i'm glad we ignore that philosophy and get stuck in, and now with added 'pelvic protection'.

Would an exoskeleton not be more useful, considering that humans already come with an endoskeleton as standard?

So you have to wear an armoured nappy in the BA now?

That's true, you also beat up student protestors and surrender in Iraq.

I wouldn't say the BA ignore that philosophy RGJ. That's a silly statement to make, if anything, they embrace that philosophy because they know they can't win if it comes down to a war of attrition.
The Taliban can afford to lose hundreds if not thousands of personel because their casualty figures are never going to be collated and published, causing unrest on the homefront or a reluctance to join their ranks. Whereas every single death of the Coalition is published, analysed, and often investigated.

The British, US, Canadians, and everyone else in the coalition need to preserve the lives of their troops in order to preserve public support at home. Without that, the war is lost.

beat up students if required yes, but never surrendered in Iraq, infact we are still in Iraq - unlike certain armies i know who surrendered in the Congo

either way, my gonads will be well protected no matter what the task is.
