  • Singapore soldier 'remorseful' over maid backpack gaffe

    In your own time...

    A Singaporean soldier who was pictured with a maid carrying his backpack has identified himself to his commander and undergone counselling, officials say.

    The soldier was "remorseful", defence official Col Desmond Tan said in a letter published in the Straits Times.

    The recruit was undergoing physical training prior to basic training.

    The image, which was first published on social media sites, has led to debate in Singapore on whether conscripts and their training are tough enough.
    'It was wrong'

    The photograph showed the soldier in fatigues on a path with his maid following behind carrying his military field-pack on her back.

    "The serviceman concerned has identified himself to his commander," said Col Tan.

    "The recruit is remorseful for his actions and realises that it was wrong for him to have allowed this," he said.

    "He has been counselled and continues his training. The SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) has reminded all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public."

    Singapore maintains a conscript-based military. Every able-bodied male citizen and permanent resident aged 18 and over must have two years of military training.

    The soldier in question was undergoing physical training before starting a nine-week Basic Military Training course
    A Singapore soldier who was photographed with a maid carrying his backpack has owned up and undergone counselling, the defence ministry says.

    To be honest, there were times I would have let my aged granny carry my bergen!

    'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
    He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

      that's a bit harsh.

      women spout off about equality but when we ask females to do the same as we do it lands a male soldier in trouble.

      typical.

      they should make this man the Provost Sergeant.

        Having carried more than one females kit off an exercise area (strapped to the top of my own) as they were "tired and emotional", I do agree with you RGJ!

        However, to be fair, in this case I don't think that tabbing with the bosses bergan was what she signed up for - it's not exactly dusting and ironing!

              Reminds me of the drill night where one of the new guys had the standard of ironing / bulling pointed out to him by the RSM.
              "Sorry sir, I'll tell my mum how you want it for next week" was the reply!

              He's probably still doubling around the parade ground

                  National Service in Singapore is a big deal, that's why there has been such a big deal over this.

                    Nothing ****ing worse than when that happens!

                    I have to say, I like the concept of what they tried. I may just try it someday... When the CO isn't around of course

                      Viking land must have changed since I left

                      we now have vikings with their own maids,

                      Are you just back from Chad/Liberia HA?
                      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                      Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                      The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                      The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                      Are full of passionate intensity.
