    The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr. Alan Shatter, T.D. today travelled to Cork on his first official visit to both the Naval Base in Haulbowline and Collins Barracks.

    On arrival at the Naval Base in Haulbowline the Minister was greeted by the Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Service, Commodore Mark Mellett, the Officer Commanding Naval Operations Command, Captain Hugh Tully and the Officer Commanding Naval Support Command, Captain Robert Scarrott. Following a briefing by senior Naval Service officers, the Minister was brought on a tour of the Naval Base.

    On arrival at Collins Barracks, the Minister was greeted by the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Sean McCann and the General Officer Commanding
    1 Southern Brigade, Brigadier General Paul Pakenham. The Minister was briefed by the GOC and also received a brief on the Brigade’s commitment to the EU Nordic Battle Group.

    At the invitation of the Finnish Ambassador the Minister called on a Finnish Navy ship visiting Cork and attended a reception hosted by the Commanding Officer in honour of the visit.
