    The Irish Volunteers

On 25th November 1913, 3000 men were inaugurated into an organisation for Nationalists called the Irish Volunteers in Dublin. Their aim was to secure the rights and liberties common to all the people of Ireland. By 1914 there were 100,000 Irish Volunteers, for the most unarmed, a figure which caused great alarm to to the British authorities.

When the UVF was formed in 1913, the Irish Volunteers were formed in reaction, thought they werent initially as well armed or organised.

They are considered to be the direct ancestors of the Defence Forces.

          Irish Volunteers

When the Home Rule Bill was finally passed in 1912, the UVF was formed to resist by force it's introduction, and go against the wishes of this democratic act. The Irish Volunteers were formed to resist the actions of the UVF and to ensure that the democratic process was continued.
A uniform was designed and Prof Eoghan McNeill, the founder of teh Irish Volunteers, designed its distinctive button, a harp with I on the left and V on the right (as you look at it).
This button is worn to this day by Irish Armysoldiers.
The Irish Volunteers are the forerunners of the Defence Forces.
