  • Press Release on Appointment of new Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) in the Defence Fo

The Government has today appointed Brigadier General Conor O’Boyle as Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) of the Defence Forces. He succeeds Major General David Ashe who has retired.
He is the first appointee under a new competitive scheme for promotion to the rank of Major General which was introduced earlier this year. The new scheme is a fully competitive merit based scheme consistent with Commission for Public Service Appointment standards and the competition was administered by the Public Appointments Service.

    Notes for the Editor:
General O’Boyle has led a distinguished career in the Defence Forces. He joined as a Cadet in 1970 and has held a number of key appointments, most notably as Director of the Defence Forces Strategic Planning Office in the Chief of Staff’s Branch in Defence Forces Headquarters, General Officer Commanding 1 Southern Brigade and more recently, General Officer Commanding the Defence Forces Training Centre at the Curragh. He has extensive overseas experience having served in the Middle East for two years and completed three tours of duty to Lebanon. He also spent 3 years as the Deputy Irish Military Representative at the Irish Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels.
