  • Mr Jarlath "Jack" Conerney, instructor, Air Corps

    Hi all,
Every Donner will have known Jack, who passed recently aged 67. He was a civilian instructor in the Aptce school and Bolton Street tech, specialising in piston engines. He was a thorough gentleman, universally well-regarded inside and outside the Don. He was an enthusiast of all things aviation and was known even to have friends in high places in Nasa, Aer Lingus, the IAA and any other organisation connected with aviation in Ireland and beyond. He had been a Sergeant in Baldonnel, back in the heyday of the Chipmunk and was a fount of stories, anecdotes and knowledge.

    May he rest in peace
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

Jack once produced three unusual items in class and asked us to guess what they were. Once was a section of a railway line. It turned out to be a piece of the railway line, a narrow-guage rail, used by the people who built Baldonnel in 1917 to carry materials across from Lucan. The next items were a scorched brake pad and a scorched tile, about the size of a Scotch Brite pad. "You'll never guess what they are and what they're off, huh-huh-huh! (he had a deep, dry laugh). Turned out to be a brake pad and a belly tile off the Shuttle. The first one. He had legendary contacts, including many of the early Astronauts. After that, we began to take him seriously.
