reading the "air corp SAR to end?" thread, I noticed the idea of HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) being mentioned. With the Hanly report proposing to close down A&E all over the country, and the subsequent increase in reaction time for road-based ambulances for outlying areas, I think this would be essential. A few questions arise though.
Should there be a new service, or can the AC do it?
What would their roles be? Just Air ambulance, or other work?
What types of helicopters should be used?
should new laws be introduced to allow these helicopters special status in airspace?
Do we really need it?
I'm sure you lot can think up more.......
