A young Air Corps pilot was killed during a training exercise in Co Offaly this afternoon.

He was 2nd Lieutenant Raymond Heerey, from Oldcastle, Co Meath. The 22-year-old was commissioned as an officer 18 months ago.

Lt. Heerey was flying a four-seater Cessna when it crashed shortly after take-off in Clonbullogue just before 1pm. He was the only person on board.

The Irish Parachute Club runs an airfield near the village which is used by the air corps parachute section.

The dead pilot had been on duty carrying parachutists to and from Baldonnel.

The Minister for Defence, Michael Smith, said he learned with great sadness of the tragic accident.

Was it one of the Air Corp cessna he was flying or was it a civilian plane? I.E. was he on duty at the time?

Regardless, may he rest in peace

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
