The alleged offences relate to technical measures concerning fishing gear.

Both vessels are being escorted to Cobh where they are expected to arrive in the morning.

Earlier, an Irish fishing vessel, the Ocean Reaper 2, was detained by the LE Emer and has been escorted to Castletownbere.

      Killybegs fishermen welcome investigation
      13/10/2004 - 09:38:58

The Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation says it welcomes a Garda investigation into fraud allegations in Donegal fisheries.

The Minister for the Marine, Noel Dempsey, has asked gardaí to investigate claims by a local fisherman that fishing quotas have been ignored, catches under-reported and logbooks falsified.

It is expected the accusations will also be investigated by fisheries officials from the European Commission.

Head of the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation, Sean O'Donoghue, said he stands by the record of his members and said the organisation would not condone any illegal activities.

and why aren't the vessels met by some sort of departmental inspector when they come along side...damn sight cheaper than having naval vessels running around the atlantic ocean after a few trawlers.

Please don't be so harsh on foreign fishermen ...its only a job and the risk of detention is seen as an acceptable one. There are rarely any hard feelings between the fishing crews and the NS.

Quite the opposite from what i hear. In the days when the inshore poachers were beating the fishery ballifs with clubs and gaffs, the NS were being helped aboard trawlers and welcomed with mugs of fresh coffee.

Those who work at sea are united against a common foe. The same one that provides their livelyhood. The Men who board the trawler today are often the same men who are helping put out a fire onboard tomorrow.

There is nothing comparable on land.
