  • 1982 Border Duty

In 1982 on border duty when out with the Gardai was the respirator carried in the left hand pouch and did we carry helmets. I should remember but I drank a lot in those days.

The respirator was normally carried in the left hand pouch, or in the kidney pouches. To answer the second question , No i dont ever remember wearing a helmet on the border.certainly not the old steel one anyway.(replaced in 85 )I wasent up on border duty until around 85- 86 so i dont know how accurate this reply is. Ok

Well, when I was there in the late 70s we were issued and had to wear the same helmets as the PDF. I will never forget the look on the COs face when he seen the tin pot helmets we arrived with from world war two, but that was what was on issue to us at the time.

Some units still have stocks of them, for the unlikely event that the full establishment strength suddenly turns up out of the blue, because not enough modern helmets have been issued to the unit

hopefully the same thing that you hope wont happen when we escorted them on arms searches in abandoned farmhouses after you have cordoned off the immediate area and the garda walks up and kicks in the door

No spooky barry is right, there are still piss pot helmets with some units, even dublin units for that matter

Some units have more of them, than they do of the current FCA issue ones

That old style helmet, according to The cadre on my Pots course is actually contrary to H&S,and should be disposed of. Most units have dumped theirs. Candidates on that course who arrived with the steel helmet were directed towards the skip.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

FP the unit whos flash you are using has more GS helmets for Ranges than personnel, so how did someone end up using the steel 100 BC helmet?
