  • Pre Potential Officers Course 2005

Given the restructuring coming this year, and the amalgamation of so many units, will there be a pre-potential officers course this year? If so, who is running the course? Just curious!

  • #2
Last year, they said there will proberly not be one.

If there is one, it will more than likely be run by the DFTC as the Pot Officers Course 2005, as they will be responsible as RDF Training Authority in the future.

There won't be a POTS or Standards course for at least 2 yrs either
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

With the turnover of personnel as it is how will units function after two years without career courses?

What is the justification for stopping such courses for a significant time?

Someone ring RDFRA and find out
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

Well obviously my information was wrong. It came from an officer who was in the know and its what I was told. But if I'm wrong I appologise for falsly informing you

Don't forget you and Odin are in different Brigades....

there maybe a maditorium on NCOs courses but this is to try nad thin out the dead wood in theNCO ranks and give enlisted mne more expieirnce in the field before becomming NCOS it has become blatantly obvious that man units are mere sendind candidates who are mediocre in order to keep plces open in the ff cahnce a shining star may emerge. If units do not subscribe to course they loose their allotmnet of places in forthcoming course. Why does it haveto be NCOS courses...why not specialist course run a t a brigade level to cover stadardised training and specialised traing ...drivivg ...motorbikes ...trucks heavy weapons...surely if an NCO is given a role of NCO ic support platoon without heavy weapons training its a waste of time...I spent two years as an understudy position sa recce section corporal in charge of a single vehicle ...to be adavanced to Reece sergeant and given complete cahrge of the recce elelmnet......The previous recce sergeant had also operated in the armour role and so when the requiremnet for a second trooop sergeant came into play for a nexercise he was suitablely qualified and nobody had any gripes as he had gone throught the system snd learhed the roles.OK he is now 34 years old but can now operate at troop sergeant level but in PDF and RDF...as I can with the reece role.

everything comes to he who waits if he puts in the time and makes himeself availaable for understudy roles.

This is the only way the intergration will work if guys put in the time with people who have operated effectively in the required role and for camps and exercises are seconded to the right units again ...the cav ahve been doing this in the south fot the past 4 years with top results where our role is a n actaual part and not as a reserve or enemey.Too long have the RDF been a training too for the PDF.

Given a discussion I had with joker last night he seems to agree with this view and if a few like minded guy were prepared to push this level of interegartion at a local role we would be far better off when the catual interegration takes places

                    Dicussions please.

                      Complete and utter Hogwash!

There is massive discrepancies in Numbers (in the East at least) where there are something like 200 vacancies for Cpl's and 70 odd for officers. Of course the biggest problem is the Lack of Privates. The Way the Re-Org WILL be happening over the Next 6 months (when the Officer and NCO appointments within the new Units are to be Finished) There will be a need to replace these officers and NCO's who are transferred/Promoted. Also what about units (like mine) who have cooks using a Cpl. and sometimes Sgt. Rank who will be transferred to the Logs Bn. To say that there won't be any courses run to allow people to qualify for these promotions is Rediculous!!

There is nothing stopping the Promotion of Pte's to NCO and NCO to Officer over the Next few Years. I do think Discretion is advised though. You do not want a Unit with a full quota of Officers/Sgts who have lack of Junior NCO's to train 30 or so Privates. We need to swell the Recruit Ranks first.

It May be a problem in the South where there will be a lack of Promotion to Specific Ranks. I.e. the Unique ones (CQ/CS/Capt/Comdt./BQ/MAJ) This would mean a swelling of LT/Sgt Rank waiting for promotion and would pass down the Line to Cpl maybe even 3* But I doubt any new Unit will initially have its full quota of Cpl's / 3*'s

Is it not strange that the infantry units that are understrength (East) will have their establishments cut only marginaly in the re-org. This is also where the bulk of the states population resides.

The greatest cuts will occur in areas with the highest effective strengths and higest levels of recruitment and a relatively low population.

Please no bullshit answers about there being less sources of entertainment outside dublin.

That's what happens when you try and make each brigade the same size.

                            Bailer makes a valid point.

Case in point : 1 inf sub-unit I know has

55-70 ptes regularly in, 3 x active CPL, 2 x active SGT , no CS and no CQ ...

( and before you ask about inactive, there's not that many )

A similar problem is reflected around the brigade, though not so bad
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

I think the problem comes down to how the FCA/RDF is marketed. You can get the numbers in if you sell a the Reserve as a product, something they can be a part of. An idea would be going into schools to 4th/5th yr students and try and get them to enlist. I know this sounds stupid but if you market sand properly you will make a fortune in the desert. Would a recruitment video for schools be a bad idea??
