Naval team blows up World War Two mine

A MARINE danger was averted yesterday when the Naval Service blew up a World War Two mine found floating two miles off the Waterford coast.

The mine, which was detected when it became entangled in the fishing gear of a trawler last Monday, was removed by naval service personnel to shallow waters for disposal.

After the fishermen realised what was in their nets, they dropped the mine in waters known not to be used by trawlers.

Ships were urged to avoid the area pending a disposal operation, which was directed by Haulbowline naval base in Cork.

Naval personnel confirmed that the mine was a World War Two weapon and that it was potentially dangerous, given the quantity of decaying munitions contained within its rusted shell.
