    Well,
Michael Smith was walking down the Roscrea road, one bright and sunny spring morning. He noticed a rustling in the ditch. Being a curious sort, he went to have a look, and lo and behold it was a leprechaun! The poor little mythical character was stuck in a barbed wire fence. Michael was delighted, because his mammy had always told him that if you rescued a leprechaun, you'd get a wish.
Michael duly released the little fella, and got his wish. Michael asked for around 30 Bofors 40L70 guns, and some attendant Flycatcher Radars, preferably Dutch surplus.
Well the Leprechaun was an honourable chap, and in a few minutes, the AD regiment were scratching their heads in amazement looking at the new machines parked up in the square.

Where do you think the money came from?

            New Guns

The new guns are retro-fitted L70's which were acquired from the Dutch at a bargain basement price. They are very nice bits of kit which are controlled by and operated alongside the flycatcher radar units. In terms of comparison the old L60 guns which the RDF AD units operated were practically stoneage, the new guns have brought us into the electronic age in one giant leap.

The AD units are only now beginning to train on them and they will hopefully be fired later this year.

By the way how do you view/download attached images?

If these were the cast offs, what SHOULD we have gotten?
                Meh.

We were practically given them . There was a proposal in for the AD to get jeep mounted gattlin gun types. The Dutch surplus L70's became available and someone somewhere thought that this was a good idea. Fair enough, it brings us into the electronic age but they are pretty much pointless (sorry boforgunner, I know you love them). They take 2.5hrs to get ready. They can't possibly conform with any health and safety regulations. The EPA could shut them down due to emissions. They are an absolute health hazard. When an accident happens with these weapons it will be 'Game over, ball burst!'.

They do look relatively impressive, especially with all the rounds piled on top. They spin and they're radar controlled - all encourages new recruits.

The new L70 are purely a defensive weapon, they are designed to be emplaced and ready for action well in advance of an enemy attack, as for health hazard, that's only if the gun commander and crew are not doing their jobs properly, the training on this new weapon is being taken extremely seriously. In my opinion this new weapon is far safer than the old L60, all the steps are a lot slower and controlled instead of getting the gun on the ground and firing in five minutes. In addition, as for exhaust emissions, it's an engine and can be reconditioned or cleaned up.
Don't forget to mention the 98% accuracy when engaging targets up to mach 2 either, given the current financial climate this weapon is the best the reserve ADs could have hoped for short of SAMs.

I think the emissions here are the electromagnetic ones from the radar.

A mobile phone mast is in the ha'penny place compare to what a search radar can pump out :D

Except some civilian radar also uses an active scan system, not as accurate as the transponder system, but a handy back-up to have nonetheless ..
