  • Low Pressure Guns

Can someone please explain to me the differences in performance between low and high pressure guns of the same calibre.

I'm presuming that pressure has a direct impact on the velocity of the round being fired and therefore the range and effectiveness (especially against hard targets) but beyond that I draw a blank.

Are LP guns just a poor mans alternative for use on lightweight vehicles or is there a negligible loss of performance in most roles?

And can ammunition compensate for any shortfalls.

This system is compatible with all current NATO 105mm service ammunitions.

That''s an impressive piece of equipment
There is no problem that cannot be fixed with high explosive.

Low pressure guns also have range limitations. The round travels slower, so (a) more time for the target to jink, and (b) can be a little less accurate at longer ranges.

The primary role for such a gun isn't armour penetration, but fire support. To deal with armour, the primary round is usually HEAT.

The weapon fitted as the main armamnent on the AML 90 si a low pressre weapon..it needs to be so because of the restricted space for recoil travel and the insatilty that a high pressure weapon would have on a high turreted four wheel vehicle.
So a low pressure gun in effect is a weapon with a lower amount of energy developed by the propellant charge driving the round.
This will adversly affect the performance of the weapon...but enables weapons of reasonable calibre to be fitted to vehicles that would not normally be able to operate weapons of such a calibre.
As cal tank says the normal role of such weapons is fire support so the amunition supply need not be that specialised...normally High explosive backed up with a few HeaT rounds just in case.

I've seen the AML 90 firing the main weapon. If thats the effect of a low pressure weapon, I'd hate to see what a high pressure 90mm on an AML would do. It would probably end up on the other side of the Glen!

The round or the Aml 90?

its a low pressure weapon ..given that it has limited recoil run out..and a very unstable fire platform...the gun is onlydesigned to fire its designated ammunition..but it is quiet awesome for what it is.

                Hi all
That 90mm gun in the AMLs claimed kills on T-55s in Israeli and S.African use, so it must be of some use.
