A recruit replys to a SPO as YES SPO, YES SENIOR PETTY OFFICER or Sir.
For Example: A CPO is Chief or Sir.
Generaly most Officers or NCO's are replied to as SIR or MAAM
ordinary seamen and able bodied seamen are known as junior ratings,their army equivalent would be 2* and 3* privates. Leading seamen are junior NCOs and are equivalent to corporals.POs,SPOs, CPOs, SCPOs andWOs are equivalent to Sgt, CQMS, CS, BQMS and SM. On board ship due to lack of space Leading Rates use the junior rates mess and all other Senior Ranks use The Senior Rates Mess.Altough strictly in military terms a PO is not considered to be a senior NCO.
Sorry kermit your talking out of your arse my son...the are non Commissioned officers...according to pay grade and are only seperated at rates level aboard ship.At all other levels NCOs mess together..they are still abranch of the Army..or service so they are non commissioned officers!

Leading hands are the equivelant of corporals.
Naval NCOs are adressed by rank only and never ever sir...unless you want a bollocking.
Comissioned rank when being adressed in the first person are sir and at any other time by their rank....
The correct for of adress for an SPO..or SCPO is senior....the SPO rank being exclusive to the supplies side of the admin branch to coincide with the army quarter master sergeant rank!
Warrant officers are warrant...and maybe called sir...some have a preference....
A PO is rated to be a senior NCO due to the change of uniform.....hence the change of mess. Senior NCOs aboard ships are normally departmnet heads so warrant the title senior NCOs. They also live in twin or single berths...as opposed to leading and other ranks....
Warrant officers are the senior members of the NCOS mess as they are NCOs...not officers....
And the aircorps spent so little time at sea they never had time to be bothered by living arrangements...they're are no differences in food or general conditions for anybody on board...some do watches..the rest are passengers!....except for the cooks...Any way the Aer Corps had no say in maters as they were only tolerated at sea..never accepted....
The confusion arises with leading ranks who dress as junior ratings but are grade as NCOs as they all must pass the relevant professionals course before being accepted as potential NCOs....in the case of Executive barnch or Seamans division ..its called an EDH.....
In the RN...an AB is equivalet to a lance corporal...and years ago here we had the corresponding ranks of AB1...and AB2.......
