Has anyone heard of Free State soldiers being given houses or land in return for service in the Army?
Family folklore says a grand uncle of mine was given his cottage in Galway because he served.
I can't find a reference on the net only for British army ex-servicemen.
I know that in North Kildare there is a stretch of road known as 'Truce Road'; the story goes that ex Free State soldiers got Land Commission holdings there after the War of Independence. However I dont think there was any formal scheme as in the British Soldiers and Sailors Trust; rather it was probably just good old Irish clientelism which applied all over the place as regards how jobs, housing and Land Commission holdings were allocated by Governments of all hues over the years.
