  • Cpl. Alex Carolan RDF

    Cpl Alex Carolan RDF was buried in Lifford today. He was the an Post driver killed on monday. I was talking to Alex at our last field night and could not belive the news once I heard it. He will be sadly missed by all in the 4th Western Brigade, particularly the 58th Inf Bn. The funeral was conducted by his friends in A, B and C coy of the 58th, the first time (I'm told) the RDF has conducted a complete funeral. Members of A and B coy were the bearer party, the pall bearers and the main marching body, C coy made up the rest of the marching body and the rifle salute party.

    R.I.P Alex
    I knew a simple soldier boy.....
    Who grinned at life in empty joy,
    Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
    And whistled early with the lark.

    In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
    With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
    He put a bullet through his brain.
    And no one spoke of him again.

    You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
    Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
    Sneak home and pray you'll never know
    The hell where youth and laughter go.

                RIP to a fallen comrade
                Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                Are full of passionate intensity.

                  Was only chatting to him on the range on Sunday for the final bren shoot, one of the nicest guys you could meet, always smiling and helpfull.

                  Thanks to all the personnell who were involved yesterday, you did yourselves, the unit but more importantly Alex proud. A fitting send off to a genuine guy.

                  R.I.P Alex, the range won't be the same without you next year or the years ahead.

                      I went into an Italian restaurant and ordered dessert and they gave me tiramisu and a blindfolded horse and I said No, I said mask a pony (mascarpone)
