  • Book of Condolence. Sgt Derek Mooney

I am sad at the loss of a special friend and one of the finest soldiers I have ever known. Sergeant Derek Mooney ARW killed in a vehicle accident with UNMIL. The Defence Forces has lost a good and honest man.

    R.I.P. Derek

(Derek in training with G.I.G.N. Paris France)

    (Derek also in Paris)

    The Green Berets

    Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

    Silver wings upon their chest
    These are men, Ireland’s best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live off natures land
    Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage peak from the Green Berets

    Silver wings upon their chest
    These are men, Ireland's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
    Leaving her his last request

“Put silver wings on my son’s chest
Make him one of Ireland's best
He’ll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret”

    Silver wings upon their chest
    These are men, Ireland's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret.

This is an old ballad from the Vietnam days, but has being heard sung in it's modifed version at ARW functions by ex-members.

              What can I give,
              O soldier, leal and brave,
              Long as I live,
To pay the life you gave?

              What tithe or part
              Can I return to thee,
              O stricken heart,
That thou shouldst break for me?

              The wind of Death
For you has slain life's flowers,
              It withereth
(God grant) all weeds in ours.

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to labour and seek for no reward, save that of knowing that I do your holy will.
