Cmdr Rory Costello RIP | Association of Retired Commissioned Officers (arcoireland.com)

Ciaran Rory Costello, a nephew of Lieutenant General M.J. Costello, was a member of 8 Naval Service Cadet Class and was commissioned in November 1970. On 12 July 1996 Rory had the honour, as skipper of LÉ Eithne the Naval Service Flagship, of taking the salute from warships from Holland, Britain, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and France as they saluted the Naval Service jubilee. Dressed overall in national and naval flags, the parade stretched from Monkstown to Whitegate, from the Spit Bank Lighthouse to the Dogsnose Bank. Perhaps, Rory’s most memorable achievement was his restoration of the two signalling towers at Roche’s Point. Rory served overseas with UNTSO and UNIFIL and on retirement took up an appointment with DPKO UNNY.
