The Naval Service vessel LE Aoife has detained the Spanish fishing vessel 'Vispon' approximately 100 nautical miles West of Dingle at 10.30am this morning.
The detention was in relation to an alleged breach of fishing regulations. The vessel is now being escorted by the LE Aoife and is expected to arrive into Castletownbere, Co. Cork at midnight tonight where it will be handed over to the Gardai.
This is the first detention by the Naval Service in 2011; a total of 1,666 boardings were carried out in 2010, resulting in 70 warnings and 8 detentions.
