...were out in force today. I went up to our local school in West Wicklow to collect my daughter and what goes by, only a 94-D Acmat wrecker. Begod, sez I, not many of them left. It was immediately followed by a shiny, new (10-D-) huge wrecker (don't know what type) but it was a big three or four axle job, which was then followed by a tatty 96-D- wrecker. First thing I thought of, Cosantoir photo shoot, out with the old, in with the new and all that.Any clues?

Probably just an exercise.
The 96 reg must of been Leyland and the 10 reg the MAN.
Not the Crane or workshop variants, but of course they were newer, under the usual scheme of things a specialist vehicle can be kept for 25 years once they do not become too expensive to maintain
During the summer an 89 Acmat 6x6 wrecker from the Curragh with 31000 km and a UN white maintence body Acmat with 18000km on the clock were scrapped in Portlaoise , as far as I am aware two maintence Acmats and possibly two wreckers were scrapped /shredded from Cathal Brugha with similiar low kms on the clock. The galling thing is they were scrapped not offered for sale ,not returned to ACMAT ,scrapped for a few pound return ,making the tax payer fund the enormus the cost of the vehicles ,why buy vehicles in the first place if there are not going .I have pictures of the first two vehicles if I can figure how to post them up
about five weeks ago an Acmat wrecker with low mileage was sent a midland scrapper for disposal ,any other army would have sold it off for the best price obtainable it had a 1989 plate
And I am sure there is a pic on flickr of an Acmat 3 axle wrecker in a scrap yard!!
I should have said not all of them were scrapped, AFAIR the '94 reg one was bought after the return of UNISOM II, in light of the good showing the Acmats had over there.
