Artillery fires are an important part of light armoured Cavalry tactics so having mobile Artillery for DFs is a bigger hole than the direct fire piece if you're not deluding yourself into pseudo tanking.

I would agree for a balanced Army but the big guns have never gone overseas at least the AML90s have had a few outings. So a Centauro B2 or Type 16 MSV might actually get used while a GOaT 15mm would likely never see more than the Glen.

That's where my money goes on a common platform ('whatever replaces the PIII) with a 120mm mortar mounted it's much less of a reach for our logs capability than having any other option. Albeit still a hungry one for rounds.

Towing or airlifting L118s or Brandt 120s would have been a huge challenge for us and in most cases any threat that would have required them in theatre would have overpowered them.

But a pair (at a time. Rotation is the spice of serviceability) of 120mm mortars in the same platform as our manoeuvre elements with contemporary targeting, sighting and laying are a much more manageable investment with a dramatically better return.

Also the option of laser guided and top attack rounds combined with recce cars that can guide them. And mortar launched drones/sensors mean that you're not just sending it for violence/illum

In fairness though, if the Cav went with the Coyote and Jackal as a platform, and the Arty had the Extenda Mk 2 with the 105mm, would do wonders for supply chains in spare parts, commonality of training on vehicle platforms, and dare I say it, interoperability!! Afterall, didn't the commission recommend the establishment of "Combat Service Regiments"

You know there is. You know why? Cav didn't like the idea of the proposed "All Arms Close RECCE" Course that was being mooted to replace both the Infantry and CAV YE RECCE Courses. They wanted to remain separate. They also didn't want to wear a RECCE badge designed for the Infantry(even though a CAV Variant was prototyped). Cue teddy bears out of the pram and a whole new Course,and badge ,for the Raccoons.

I guess when you lack the specialised recce vehicles to do your intended role, you have to compensate somehow. Otherwise what are you but infantry who just debus farther away.

Imagine the difference in confidence you'd have on a UN mission if you knew that you had a 120mm or even a 105 covering your back. Even back in Congo days, it was entirely feasible to ship out a few 25 pdrs yet they chose not to. I'd agree with a vehicle mounted 120mm if a direct fire gun was not made available.

When I look at either the Centauro B2 or Type 16 MCV I wonder about the ammo for the main gun. The 120mm is now the most common NATO round available and has been developed into a number of new multi-purpose round which are programmable. Also with it combustible casing it dramatically reduces what end up in the turret after firing. As for the 105mm NATO it is sufficient for a direct fire support vehicle afteral we do not want such a vehicle going head-to-head with tanks. Now that the 105mm is arming the USArmy MPF (light tank) it will be interesting what new development may come. A new programmable round like we have for the 120mm, a combustable casing that can be used in all L7 compatible guns?? If that was to happen the 105mm would be the round of choice as you can carry a lot more for the same space/weight. Might be time to go down to the local Mitsubishi dealer and see what they can offer as a deal!
