What say ye about upgradeing the current PIII turrets with the GAU-19 12.7mm gatling gun?
It weighs only slightly more than the M2HB already used and the only modification needed would be a replacement for the existing mantlets and a space for the small suitcase sized battery pack.
Compared to other systems it has:
1.Relatively small weight and size
2.Uses a shell already in widespread Irish service although it can fire the full range of 12.7mm ammunition (SLAP etc) which greatly enhances its capabilities against other light armour, embrasures, etc.
3. Fitted with the correct electronics it is sufficiently manouvreable and fast firing to act as an anti-helicopter weapon, and sufficiently destructive to destroy a target before it can be targeted (Very short range obviously).
4. The System is not particularly protrusive normally but is highly intimidating when in operation.
5.Free of the traditional M2HB stoppages.
The MK19 is as I'm sure eveyone is aware, a machine gun that fires 40mm grenades out beyond the kilometre mark, I would argue that this weapon would be an extremely useful brigade asset for the DF as it is highly mobile (mounted on a truck, WMIIK or AFV) and destructive at ranges where our limited artillery resources are not needed yet are beyond the range of most infantry weapons.
In concert with a battalions support weapons a trio of Mk-19s mounted on the back of a cross country vehicle would supplement the engaged units firepower to the point where Mortar and Artillery fire could be directed at the enemy's rear.
