exactly - 'an' armoured 4x4. this hardly means the new 4x4 for the DFI will be armoured?

    New armoured 4x4.

Armoured 4x4s sent to protect Irish soldiers

A small fleet of 'discreet' armoured SUVs have been sent to Afghanistan and Lebanon to protect Irish soldiers serving in the trouble spots.

Seven Irish soldiers are stationed in the Afghan capital Kabul with the Nato-led Isaf force. The city has been the scene of increasingly daring attacks by the Taliban on the US embassy and Nato headquarters.

Three armoured Nissan Patrols, a special version of the 4x4 used by the Defence Forces, are in use by the Irish soldiers, who are mostly bomb-disposal and intelligence experts.

Armoured SUVs are also being used by Irish troops in Unifil where Ireland has a mechanised battalion equipped with Mowag and RG-32M armoured vehicles.

Now the Defence Forces is adding to its armoured SUV fleet with a tender for another vehicle described as an upper mid-size 4x4.

A Defence Forces spokesman said: "It's an armoured 4x4 type specced for deployment either to Unifil, Isaf or other missions with similar IED -- improvised explosive device -- threat or could be used for training purposes if not deployed.

"Similar specced 4x4s are currently deployed in Unifil and Isaf," he said.

I suppose these cars aren't used that often so one can expect them to be around a long time.
All I know is that laast Octobre the Toyota was sitting in the shed with the Landrover.
The lad from 2 FAR said it was being made ready for a standdown parade.
According to the lads polishing it many prefered it to the Landrover.

That's the one, but look at the date, 2006.

TD you should know about the toyota. It is parked with the Landrover in the shed beside the guns.

It has been kept perfect from day 1. I saw it about a year ago while the lads from 2FAR were polishing it.

News to me - the last time I was in that shed, it was a very shiny Land Rover in there....

They have a lovely restored Toyota for funerals but its rarely used and the ex-Wing Land Rovers are used for almost all funerals.

We did have various different models purchased from 1954 on (the Nissan Patrol started to replace them from 1989).

As Rex says the main ones still in use are the ambulances and gun carriage towers.

From what I remember of the media reports the SORVs were purchased as a direct result of the accident in Liberia. If I remember correct the causes were put down to the stability of the vehicle due to altered centre of gravity (on account of the heavy weapons mount).
