  • another family open day

One of those all too rare family days occurred today in the grandly Titled Casement Aerodrome,[known to the rest of us as Bal' or the Don].
Weather wise it was a smashing day even if members of the Turkey tribe and the odd admin [they are all odd] got sunburnt.
So the food did'ent kill anyone and the museum was open.
There were some nice vehicles to look at and crawl over, including a Mowag and a Dangerwing F350.
Bouncy castles were out in force too.......

Ah yes , the air display.
Apart from only one jet of the bertie bordello type, every thing had props or rotor blades, we got A111's[swan song ] PC-9M's, the Good old Cessanas, a cracking display from a Casa, we even had Brig General James flying the Avro Tutor. The Black Knights dropped in as well.
Then there was a nice set piece bit of fun involving PC-9M's A111, one of the EC-135's, Paras, lots of loud bangs, and an awful amount of blanks including a mega amount of GPMG.............
........But the good guys won in the end.

You get any photos of that final set piece?
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

          Family day

As far as I know the GOC was flying the Avro 631 Cadet. A Avro Tutor is the Avro 621 type. I do believe that there is a difference

                Baldonnel Open Day

                News Break

A Irish Air Corps Pilatus PC-9M was shot down by Fantasia Freedom Fighters close to Baldonnel Aerodrome at approximatly 15.55 GMT with what is believed to have been a man portable air defence system similiar in appearance to a Sraaw (back blast similator ) Both pilots ejected safely and our believed to have been immediatly capurted by the rebels!

Information claim the pair of aircraft came under attack while patroling a exclusion zone around the Air Base after reports of enemy activity in the area.

Immediatly after this incident the Air Corps Operation Section in HQ put a immediate plan in action where CSAR choppers were launched along with a further PC-9M to support the rescue operation and one C3 command and control chopper to control the rescue of the operation of the pilots!

The Operation was a complete success with the rescue of the downed aircrew!

Here some exclusive footage the Action News Desk can reveal...
