Cullen helicopter in emergency landing
Monday, 2 March 2009 16:31
A helicopter carrying Minister for Tourism Martin Cullen was forced to make an emergency landing in Killarney this afternoon.
Mr Cullen had just finished addressing the annual conference of the Irish Hotels Federation and had taken off from the grounds of the Malton Hotel in Killarney.
It is believed that a door of the helicopter fell off as it flew over Killarney National Park at Castlerosse outside the town.
The helicopter made an emergency landing nearby at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.
No one was injured.
Eye witnesses say Mr Cullen, who was flying with an assistant and a crew of three, was shaken following the incident.
He has since continued his journey by road to Kerry Airport from where he is expected to get a flight back to Dublin.

I know the report says the door came off, but is it possible that it just slid open?
Also - why is a military helicopter necessary to move a Minister and his staff from Kerry to Dublin? I've no objection to them being used if there is some kind of time pressure, or if the Minister is urgently required elsewhere, but today is a Monday - the Dail is not in session, and the cabinet is probably not meeting until tomorrow.

Minister Cullen safe after helicopter incident 02/03/2009 - 16:33:08
Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism Martin Cullen is safe today after a helicopter he was travelling in was forced to make a precautionary landing in Kerry.
At around 3.30pm, approximately three minutes after take off from Killarney Race Course, the port (left hand side) main door of the helicopter fell off at a height of 500 feet.
The two passengers, who were sitting on the port side of the Air Corps AW 139 helicopter, and three crew are all safe and well, after landing the pad at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.
The aircraft is currently on the ground until a Military Airworthiness Inspection Team and technicians examine the aircraft on the ground.
The same helicopter brought Minister Cullen from Waterford to Killarney this morning and was returning to Dublin when the incident occurred.
Turns out I was half right he came from Waterford!Last edited by Muzzle; 2 March 2009, 17:09.
