Again, my original point applies. The AC is a very small organisation - having all aircraft based in the one location means the the limited number of techs on hand can move from one airframe to the next easily and quickly. This is a lot less easy to do if airframes are scattered all over the country - I'm sure GTTC will be able to tell of the fun that was had trying to keep isolated Alouette deployments operational, for example.

Of course, maintenance and some other work could be outsourced and handled by civilians, particularly were there to be an operational base at a civilian airport, but I'm still less than convinced of the need to break up the AC, when proper management and a clear strategic vision would achieve a lot more.

Operating from a fixed base such as Finner does not qualify the organisation for true rough-field, self-sustaining operations, such as the British AAC are routinely capable of. When the organisation has the mentality that it will always return to Bal to fix the slightest problem, then it's not mature enough for field ops.Which is why a true Army helicopter force would have to be set up, manned and run by Army personnel, which is what great Armies such as the british or Americans have been doing for decades. Quite why anyone thinks that training air and groundcrew is too difficult for soldiers to handle is ancient thinking.

They'd probably also allow NCOs to fly the helicopters (as the Brits do), which the Air Corps would not like one bit!

They probably would let that happen if they had LOADS more aircraft, never gonna happen though.

With all the work done on them, the ex-IAC Dauphins are now entering Chilean service.

Found this little run-around exported to a number of African air forces. It’s Chinese Harbin Y-12 high wing twin-engine STOL utility aircraft and powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. Nice addition to the air corps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin_Y-12

Canadian Aerospace Group offers an upgraded Y-12 the twin panda (choice of name lol) built by the Panda Aircraft Company its got more powerful engines strengthened landing gear and upgraded avionics and interior. Its a westernised version of the Y-12 aimed at the twin otter replacement market. good few sold around the world I think of de Havilland had a problem they would have said something about it now.

                              Hi Scorpy,
how in the nameajayzus are you going to get the primadonnas in the Tower to do your bidding? If you're already teaching pilots to be FACs, then you're conflicting an ATC role with directing air support?
My memory of the ATC and firefighters in the Don is that they were dyed-in-the-wool "union rules, bud" operators. I'd pay money to watch them being deployed to somewhere dusty....I'm still of the opinion that the Don, as an organisation, is not mentally ready for genuine off-base operations. The "half-four" brigade still rule.
                              regards
