  • No to Air Corps participation in Battle Of Britain Memorial

The Air Corps have been refused permission to attend the Battle Of Britain 70th Anniversary in Biggin Hill this year despite an invite from the RAF.

Nothing to do with finance apparently as participation in other shows is going ahead!

Assuming that the refusal is on political grounds Is it not time to put the "Emergency" /Selective neutrality mindset behind us?

Thats a pity, it would have been a good opportunity to show off kit / skills.

The Trainers do very good spitfire impressions...

thats a real shame! i cant understand why really...i know all about (selective) neutrality, politics or whatever but still...many Irish fought (and still fight) with British forces
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Isn't there a restored Air Corps Supermarine Seafire. Why send the PC9's if there is something of the era.

There are several restored EX-Irish Air Corps Seafires/Spitfires, but our farsighted governments flogged them all.....
The 7 surviveing Pc-9M's would be a suitable display to send alright..

                    Hi HPT,
It's back in RAF Battle of Britain colours now.Why worry about the Donners not attending? Other junkets/"training" flights(delete inapplicable words) will appear.Still, bad form of the State not to send a representative, to honour the many Irish who took part, both in the air and on the ground.

Would have been nice to honour the memories of the likes of Paddy Finucane who hailed from Rathmines and became - the RAF's youngest Wing Commander in its history with over 32 victories to his name including some in the Battle of Britain.

With respect, Finucane had no connection with the Air Corps and has already been honoured many times over. The Irish State should participate to honour the RAF, without whose vigilant defence the UK would have been overrun by the Nazis and then us in short order. Any Irish participating in the Battle did so without Irish Govt. approval.
