  • Night Vision Goggles

I see the air corps are using night vision goggles operationally. From military.ie.

The Air Corps conducted an Air Ambulance mission using specialised Night Vision Equipment in very poor weather conditions this evening.

An Air Corps AW139 helicopter flew a teenage patient from Cork University Hospital to Baldonnel for onward transfer to Tallaght General Hospital.

This is the second Air Ambulance mission carried out by the Air Corps in 3 days involving very poor weather conditions. On Saturday afternoon the Learjet, equipped with a specialised stretcher, carried a sick child from Baldonnel to a snowbound London for an urgent transplant operation.

The Air Corps is the only organisation within the state with this specialised Night Vision Equipment capability, enabling the pilot crew to operate in reduced visibility conditions and enhancing the overall safety of night time helicopter operations.

      It is for our lot.

I would venture that NVG's are in use quite a lot lately given what I've been hearing on the radio. Lot's of night time hops from the Curragh to the Glen going on. Seems the Air Corps are a 9am-5pm organisation no more.

I went into an Italian restaurant and ordered dessert and they gave me tiramisu and a blindfolded horse and I said No, I said mask a pony (mascarpone)

they even have split maintenance shifts in Heli Flight, wonders will never cease. This puts them at about, oh, 1954 in RAF terms.Nice one.

                  Hi there,
The Dauphin, as far as I knew, didn't have NVG compatible instruments but it did have, in it's day, probably the most comprehensive IFR fit in any heli in the State.

But they were carried for SAR Ops.

NVG flying has been going on in AC for a number of years.

From what I have heard they were carried as an aid to search by the rear crew, not by the pilots flying.

The pics on flickr look cool.

"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Slightly off topic, but what anti-icing does the 139 have? is it RIPS equiped? or is it engine anti-icing only??
