i think its possible that there might just be a feeling that Ireland ought to have the defence spending of a first world European state, rather than the defence spending of, say, Legoland...

the PC-9M's should go, any deal to lease Gripen or F-16 will include the training package, so they are useless with such aircraft, and without such aircraft they are, err... useless.

the learjet should be flogged off and the money put towards a general purpose cargo aircraft - C295/C-27J/C-130 - such an aircraft could do everything the LJ can do, if in less style and comfort, but also do a great deal of things the LJ cannot do.

        Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Always thought the PC-9s were a complete waste of money. No role whatsoever. Not now, not in the future.
We need aircraft that can be used and we can get training overseas.
Having a jet to primarily ferry government ministers is also a waste of money and hours. They can take aer fungus or ryanair. It's a vanity role that should only be looked at when the AC is fit for a military purpose and has cash to spare. Of course, the government would be content with the AC if they had "air corps 1" and that was "air corps 1 and only".

Add to that will be used...... Jet fighters won't be !

1 the State couldn't afford the hours required to keep pilots current (never mind get them up to full capability
2 we couldn't afford the required weapons
3 we couldn't afford to deploy them overseas
4 they can't do air ambulance, MATS, maritime surveillance, all the jobs the AC spends most of its time doing
5 they would only be used in role a handful of times a year (a visit to QE2 (once in a lifetime), visit of U.S. president (there have been what 4 ever?), air inception (not even a monthly occurance).

Having said the civvies may be deterred from air space infringement in Dublin if they were met by an AC aircraft (although it would have landed by the time it was on station).

Your points 3 and 4 also apply to the PC9, and this aircraft does not even qualify for 5. It has no operational function whatsoever.

While I think we should get fighters, I can't see it happening without a tripling of the budget.
I disagree that we cannot afford to acquire or maintain fighters and their pilots, I do agree that the government is not going to spend on them and further agree that there are other priorities before acquiring them.
I just said the PC9s, or any other single seat aircraft that can't shoot down or shoot ground are a waste of time and submit that a 6 gripens or F-16s would be a better investment, of more use however infrequently, than the PC-9s.

if the IAC had had a deployable force of Gripen/F-16, would they have been sent, or would there have been calls to for them to be sent, to support Irish forces either in Chad or in the recent unpleasantness on the Golan?

for the inevitable pedant, when countries deploy forces on UN operations, they often also send strictly natonal contingents that come soley under their own governmental control and are hosted by friendly or commercially negotiated nearby countries whose purpose is the assist that countries UN contingent should the poo start to fly.

as an example, when UK forces were in Bosnia under UNPROFOR, there was also a UK contingent in Croatia with all the bangy-whizzy bits should the need have arisen. same with Lebannon in the early 80's with UK contingent forces being based in Cyprus.

one can't help but recall that, for example, Irelands close friend France holds a great deal of diplomatic sway in Central Africa, and indeed that Irelands' close friend the UK has its own sovereign airbase in the eastern Med...

The current White Paper (2000) which is still in force, doesn't allow for the deployment of IAC overseas at present, let's hope that changes with the forthcoming WP.

They must have eventually spent all of that money that was hidden in those bank accounts.
