    737 lands harmlessly in Finland.

At what range, you need to be very close!! the brochure figures do not reflect the real world range of an AAM.

A subsonic straight wing aircraft would have a very low probability of intercept against an aircraft at high altitude and high mach number.

Aircraft needs to be able to get into an engagement envelope to stick a sidewinder up the jacksie of a bear or 747 with a load of yanks off on their jollies to the emerald isle on board

Realistically, if we want to be able to shoot things down then we need loadsa wonga to do so, integrated radar network, couple of zoomy zoom fighter zoomies, facilities to keep em in the air, trainers, etc. If we find the cash down the back of the couch then cool. Otherwise more choppers and some medium transport for the chaps in the Don please.

The Nigerians did have the good sense to buy NNS PROSPERITY after all. (smiley)
Except that using that for "policing" anything faster than a PC9 is like trying to chase down a CLS Merc on your bicycle, on a motorway.

Haven't checked the Airbus versions but I'd guess the same. Even if we had the radar detection system to vector them in and based them in Shannon if the aircraft can just outfly them what policing are they doing, short of a shoot first policy?

Well since it will take at least some years to get operational, let's sit back, relax, build up a sensible radar network... and watch and see if the nigerians get a working air defence with these machines , or make fools of themselves...simples!
