plenty of other unusual names in the US. I was in a place in Texas called Gunbarrel City. I kid you not.

We go back and forth over the need for the PC-9M's, but presumably this is to cater for an increased intake of cadets?

To be honest I found the purchase of the PC-9m's to be cringeworthy, next door they had the super Toucano, politically 4 of them would have made more sense, given that we retain internal training, along with 5 hawks 200 series, the logic of this is simple, we only need 4 trainers, in fact only 4 PC-9m's were assigned to the training skool, while the others were supposedly ''fighters'' according to Fagen's longest surviving resident drinker.., the Hawk would have given us a little credibility and given the drivers somewhere to go for what would be a massive expansion of their training......
I don't expect many to agree, it's just idle thoughts..the PC-9m has no legs and little speed...

The whole point of 8 was to use a single aircraft type, allow 1 or 2 in deep maintenance and as cadet classes get bigger......

Thr Feb 2016 issue of An Cosantoir detailed an increased number of cadets being trained at the moment, plus an intention to give those trainees an increase in number flight hours on the PC 9. If a value for money replacement for the PC 9 lost in Galway in 2010 (RIP to the crew involved) can be found, maybe it's a useful addition in the context of providing additional capacity as the ACs primary fixed wing trainer & *limited* combat aircraft?

Although pretty well equipped, it'd be interesting to know if there any upgrade plans to enhance the aircraft's avionics/systems for the remainder of their service?

Turkey - I agree with you about the Hawk 200; 4/5 of them together with 4/3 of their 2 seat Hawk 100 breather (or the AMX), ordered in the mid-late 90s would have been a useful on-island point defence, surface strike, reconnaissance jack of all trades (recognising that it still wouldn't intercept a Bear or take down a Flanker). With around 12 of them, a 4 aircraft short-term deployable force could have been put together for overseas ops. Sorry for the Waltering, although maybe it's something being considered for the future? Time will tell.

The RAF operate a highly modified version of the original Tucano built by Shorts in NI; from what I have read, it's not exactly a perfect a/c in terms of maintenance or flight ops. The PC 9 by all accounts was the trainer the RAF could not have, and had a much better rep with the RAF evaluators than the PC 9. The Super Tucano itself is now in use with a number of air forces as an advanced trainer & light attack platform.

The super tucano is intended to be cheap CAS for poorer nations. We're barely getting the Air Corps overseas so let's maybe not buy more expensive planes we won't even use

he has a point - if the PC-9M's aren't going to be used, then what is the point squandering money - thats sorely needed elsewhere in the DF - on raising the number of waste-of-space airframes by one?

what would the (as a wild arse guess..) €2m a used PC-9M will cost buy? a 5.56mm minimi LMG for every infantry section for 3 Inf Bn's? everyone going overseas getting a desert/arid uniform? each section in a 3 Inf Bn's getting a new 7.62mm DMR with optics?

boring stuff like boots that aren't held together with electrical tape on night marches in the Wicklow Mountains?

how much fuel, blank and live would €2m buy if it just went straight into the training budget?

some of these look like sound investments, one of them is not...

The same logic could say why spend under 1bn a year on defence when it could do so much for Health, Housing etc.
The aircraft are being used for training pilots. They do that pretty well.

and are they all - bar the ones being fixed - being flown from 9-5 everyday, or are a goodly proportion sitting around doing nothing for most of the time?

does the AC need another airframe because it simply can't work the current airframes any harder without either time travel or those airframes falling out of the sky, or does it need another airframe so it can do a better display once a year?
