Can't see justification in the cost of aviation fuel so some small calibre weapons can empty a few belts into it. You could buy a low cost R/C aircraft and get the same result. 40mm was different, you had to get your round popping in the right place. The drogue would tell how close the (large) rounds were to the target. At sea the NS have been doing AA training at wallop flares for years. Don't know anyone who trains naval (secondary) gunnery using towed drones any more. PC9 air to air live firing cannon? Hell no. Thats what sims are for. JH tapdancing C.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

    • Good points on the RC planes & flares, deffo a bit more cost effective. Sure we'll see what pans out with it.

More interested to see how the SCAR project goes... Some posters mentioned APKWS as an option, but FN Herstal also have a laser guided 2.75 inch rocket which is probably a better bet. Probably be the backseater who controls the pod - would that mean we'd now have a WSO grade in the Air Corps!

Air to air firing with a Learjet target towing aircraft was mentioned in the early PC-9 days (the link to that is somewhere way back in this thread).

      • From the Irish Times

        https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2...o-be-acquired/

...and the Air Corps will receiving funding for several small Piper training aircraft.
Any idea where this came from??

Is it hint at a ab initio trainer, a twin engine trainer, a PC9 replacement or are they confusing new trainers with the GASU fixed wing project??

Want the freedom to learn? Piper Aircraft has a trainer class aircraft for you. For more than 80 years, Piper has trained generations of pilots.

It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

        • I always thought the PC9 was a bad choice of trainer for pilots who will all go on to fly twin seat aircraft, be it rotary or fixed wing. Its a fine trainer if you streaming to fast jet though, but how many hours are wasted on learning about G suits that they will never wear during their working life again?

          • Have seen zero from any official source about new aircraft …. Probably talking about payments for C295s which will be delivered next year

Cos, Military, innit!! If you took away the g-suits and the gunnery and the aerobatics and all the other fun stuff, all you'd be left with is CPLs, just like regular civvies and there'd be no incentive to sustain the "military" aspects and you could just get pilots from whatever CPL mill you choose. The absence of an inhouse interim turbine trainer such as C-90 doesn't help, either. The PC-9 has the benefit of a turbine engine, EFIS avionics and it's relatively reliable and generates lots of flying hours per aircraft per annum, so it's easier to keep doing what they do, if it generates enough warm bodies per year and transition to a PC-12 is relatively simple. If something like a PC-24 comes into view, transition to that will be also relatively simple.

              • So it's a bluff then?
Imagine if the Army spent basic training just teaching a soldier how to fire the Rifle and GPMG, and then, after they pass out, hand them a Pistol, and send them on their way?
If the navy spent years getting its crews qualified to operate their OPVs, engines, sensors, and weapons, only to point them to the civvy boat transport after and say "that's you for the rest of your career, well done.

                • Provides a very basic military light strike capability too

Until such time as the putative fighter comes along, then yes. A pilot could move on to a PC-12 or a Casa and fly it in his underpants and never fire a shot again, yet conduct "military" missions such as shifting parts to UNIFIL or dropping ARW parachutists off the ramp. The thing is, so many of the daily tasks could be done by a civvy pilot and the Don fights hard to keep it's role flying the Garda aircraft, so it wants to have it both ways. No reason on earth why the Gardai don't have their own pilots or a civvy air ambulance unit operate out of Athlone on HEMS tasks. Worldwide, both operations are conducted either by dedicated Police aircrew or civvy aircrew. What's so special about Ireland, that we need to skew the system that works perfectly elsewhere? The HSE is wealthier than the Don; let them fund a HEMS operation, instead of consuming a military heli and it's crew and all the systemic backup required, when the wider Army is always looking for heli hours.

And yet “training aircraft” hasn’t been mentioned anywhere officially

i still say it’s a typo for “transport” as in C295s for delivery next year

It is oddly specific about Piper, who wouldn't be known as providers of basic trainers.
