If it does, they'll never admit it. Don't forget the INLA blew up one of Mt Gabriel's radar in the 80s because they asserted it was part of the NATO early warning radar network.

For the same reason they always have? We couldn’t/won’t and they have to. Honestly given hopefully something from cabinet I thought the article was a bit premature, even if it’s just LoA2 at least the primary radar gap looks like it will be dealt with.

This is an old piece that George re-issues frequently. He appeared on Prime time discussing it 2 weeks ago. He's not wrong though, the UK taxpayer is interested in knowing also why they are defending us, when we are so quick to point out that we aren't part of the empire any more.

We don't know either. There was a secret agreement that they do but as it is secret nobody knows actually what is in that agreement. Although the UK does have an interest in having access to our airspace as any intruder is likely heading for the UK more than a target in Ireland.
What George is also forgetting is that we were also crucially dependent on their SAR and their willingness to come over here and help us in extremis. Our Govt wilfully declined to spend adequately on SAR and they dug us out of a few holes. Allowing the RAF to step in with fighters etc is also part of the deal, albeit not spoken about too loudly.
To be fair, RAF/RN sar only stopped carrying the can for us here the minute their SAR Heli service was privatised to HM Coastguard. RN Sea King was a familiar visitor to Cork Airport, often to train with the local pre IRCG cliff rescue teams.
